What is a commercial air curtain?
An air curtain is a device that incorporates powerful fans that create an invisible air barrier on a door or opening to effectively separate two different environments without restricting access for people and vehicles. Climate separation saves energy and reduces heating and cooling costs by up to 80%, in addition to protecting the indoor environment and increasing occupant comfort. An air curtain helps to maintain a clean atmosphere against insects, dust, particles, pollutants, odors and incoming hot and cold air flows.
How does a commercial air curtain work?
In most cases, the air entering through the inlet grille, sometimes with filter functions, is compressed by internal fans and forced through an outlet that is directed towards the open door. The filter protects the internal components (heat exchanger, fans, electronic components…etc.) from dust and particles.the fans in the air curtain can be driven directly or by the belt. The most frequently used types are centrifugal, axial, and transverse.
Some air outlets and/or slats can be adjustable to increase the performance of the air curtain according to each situation or commercial space.
Heated air curtains have a coil (electric, hot/cooled water, steam, indirect or direct gas, direct expansion, etc.) to heat or cool the jet. The heating is used to prevent people from feeling a cold air jet when passing through the door and also to heat the volume of air entering the entrance.
There are 3 possible directions of the supply airflows:
- Horizontal discharge, top to bottom
- Vertical discharge, side to side
- Horizontal discharge, from bottom to top
