What is a commercial UV air purifier?
A UV air purifier is designed to use shortwave ultraviolet light (UV-C light) to inactivate pathogens and microorganisms in the air, such as mould, bacteria and viruses. It has the same ultimate goal as all air purifiers: to reduce indoor air pollutants. This technology is also called UV germicidal irradiation, or UVGI air purifiers.
How does a commercial UV air purifier work?
They are designed to use UV lamps that can potentially alter the DNA of microorganisms and inactivate or destroy them. Depending on the material of the emitter (for example, phosphorus or quartz), this light may be bluish or not visible to the naked eye. Typically, residential units use mercury lamps that emit UV-C light at a wavelength of 254 nm, according to the EPA.
In most cases, UV light air purifiers are a combination of a forced-air system and another filter (such as a HEPA filter). Therefore, the UV light from the air purifier works in conjunction with other processes to clean the air. The ambient air of your business or industry is forced through the unit and ventilated through a chamber with bulbs emitting light at the UV-C frequency. The UV lamp is usually placed downstream of a filter in a portable air purifier. However, factors such as the type of UV lamp, humidity, and temperature can influence its performance.
The UV- lamps used in UV-C germicidal air purifiers are quiet, and the glow from many of them, depending on the housing mounted around them, is invisible to the naked eye. They are generally odorless. Generally, UV bulbs must be replaced every year, depending on the make and model.
